A research team from the Ministry of Fisheries has successfully monitored and released 19 hawksbill turtle hatchlings at Leleuvia Island Resort, a significant nesting site for this critically endangered species in Fiji. This event highlights the ongoing efforts to protect these vulnerable turtles and their habitats.

On February 15, 2026, resort staff observed that hatchlings began to emerge shortly after midnight, following an incubation period of approximately 70 days. In total, the team identified one active nest, and while 19 hatchlings were assessed by fisheries officers before their release, others made their way to the sea independently.

The Ministry of Fisheries commended the Leleuvia Island Resort for its dedication to safeguarding nesting areas for hawksbill turtles. The collaboration between the resort and the Ministry is an essential step towards ensuring the long-term conservation of Fiji’s sea turtle populations, providing hope for the continued survival of this species in the wild. Such initiatives underline the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation efforts, which can lead to positive outcomes for biodiversity.
