Fiji’s Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has highlighted the critical importance of traditional knowledge in mitigating disaster risks and fostering sustainable environmental practices. Speaking at the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, Ditoka emphasized the need to preserve ancestral practices, particularly in managing wetlands, which play an essential role in sustaining ecosystems and biodiversity.
Ditoka pointed out that conventional agricultural methods often depopulate these vital wetlands in favor of arable land, overlooking their ecological significance. He argued for a return to cherished traditions: “It’s just getting back to knowing what our elders used to do in those wetlands and relearning how to take advantage of what has been bequeathed to us in these environments.”
Moreover, the minister stressed the ongoing efforts to integrate this indigenous wisdom into formal educational frameworks, ensuring that future generations are equipped with both traditional knowledge and scientific understanding. This initiative resonates with broader discussions on disaster preparedness and climate resilience in Fiji, especially as communities face growing threats from climate-induced disasters.
Similar initiatives have highlighted Fiji’s commitment to utilizing local knowledge as a cornerstone in disaster management strategies. Building on earlier workshops and dialogues, there is a hopeful outlook that combining traditional ecological insights with modern scientific approaches can lead to more effective climate action and disaster preparedness. This blending of perspectives not only strengthens community resilience but also inspires a collective effort towards sustainability, prevailing over the numerous challenges posed by climate change.
Through these dialogues, Fiji is paving the way for a future where cultural heritage and ecological health are intertwined, fostering stronger, more resilient communities across the Pacific region. The emphasis on traditional practices underscores a collective aspiration to create a sustainable and harmonious environment that honors both people and nature.
