Fiji Harnesses Geospatial Tech to Bridge Rural-Urban Gaps and Boost Climate Resilience

Fiji is embracing geospatial innovation to enhance connections between rural communities and urban centers, streamline development planning, and bolster resilience against climate change. During the United Nations GeoNow Moganshan Talk Session held in Hangzhou, China, Paula Cirikiyasawa, the Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, underlined the significance of obtaining precise and timely data for small island nations vulnerable to environmental threats. He stressed that Fiji’s limited land area and dispersed population across islands amplify the need for effective policies that directly address rural realities.

Cirikiyasawa pointed out that geospatial tools play a crucial role in bridging infrastructure and information gaps as the government strives to manage urban expansion while ensuring that “no rural community is left behind.” He highlighted the shared challenges of Pacific nations and the importance of collaborations through the Pacific Geospatial and Surveying Council, which works alongside the Pacific Community’s Geoscience, Energy, and Maritime Division.

The focus on partnership also extends to mentoring and technical exchange programs designed to empower young professionals to maintain and improve national systems. Cirikiyasawa emphasized that technology should serve the needs of people, enabling better integration of satellite imaging, Internet of Things (IoT) data, and mobile technology for coordinated national planning.

By harnessing geospatial innovation, Fiji aims to develop a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient framework for all communities while addressing the looming threats posed by climate change. The UN GeoNow 2025 Conference serves as a platform for international leaders and experts to discuss advancements in geospatial information and governance, further strengthening Fiji’s commitment to sustainable development in the Pacific region.

This proactive approach showcases Fiji’s determination to navigate the challenges of climate adaptation and resource management effectively. By prioritizing innovative solutions and collaboration, the nation is setting a positive example for other countries facing similar environmental challenges, fostering hope for a resilient future across the Pacific.
