Fiji’s health sector is grieving the untimely loss of Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary of the Health Ministry, who passed away in Lautoka last Saturday after a brief illness. His death has sent shockwaves throughout the medical community, where he was highly regarded as a silent yet impactful leader.
Dr. Alipate Vakamocea, president of the Fiji Medical Association, expressed deep sorrow over Dr. Tudravu’s passing, highlighting his remarkable dedication to the medical profession in Fiji. Dr. Tudravu was a pivotal figure in negotiations with the Fiji Government, leading to significant pay increases for doctors in the region—an achievement that continues to benefit healthcare professionals to this day.
“Dr. Jemesa was a silent but decisive leader who always carefully considered every detail before making a decision. He was consistently someone we could rely on when the way became unclear or when we had lost our direction altogether,” Dr. Vakamocea stated, reflecting on Dr. Tudravu’s unwavering support and reliability. He described the late health official as a lighthouse, mentor, and friend, underscoring the profound impact he had on those around him.
The Ministry of Health and Medical Services confirmed Dr. Tudravu’s passing, acknowledging his extensive career spanning over three decades. An accomplished orthopaedic surgeon, he trained at Newcastle Hospital in Australia and held various key positions, including medical superintendent of Lautoka and the Colonial War Memorial hospitals. Dr. Tudravu was appointed chief medical adviser before rising to the role of permanent secretary in February 2024.
His contributions to the health sector in Fiji were invaluable, and the community remembers him not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his character and the relationships he built. Dr. Tudravu’s absence will be felt deeply by colleagues, patients, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his career.
