International rugby referee and Rooster Chicken Grassroots Fiji 7s Ambassador, Rasta Rasivhenge, recently shared his insights on the significance of the Grassroots tournament in Fiji, underscoring its role as a crucial platform for nurturing the country’s future rugby stars. In an interview, Rasivhenge expressed his appreciation for being part of the Fiji Sports Council Grassroots tournament, which is sponsored by Rooster Chicken.
Rasivhenge emphasized that beyond sheer competition, the tournament is fundamentally about developing young talent. He stated, “It’s a great honor to be part of the Fiji Sports Council Grassroots tournament, thanks to Rooster Chicken as the sponsor. The greatest thing about it is that it’s all about development, getting the future rugby stars of Fiji.”
As an ambassador for the event, Rasivhenge highlighted the collaboration between the tournament and the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), noting its importance in retaining developing players. Drawing from his extensive experience with South Africa’s Elite Player Development System (EPD), he shared insights into how a systematic approach can successfully groom national team prospects from a young age.
Rasivhenge noted, “Grassroots rugby is a great initiative. In South Africa, I have worked with Rassie Erasmus for the past 12 to 15 years within the EPD, which starts as early as age 16.” He explained the structured pathway from under-16 tournaments through to under-20 levels, illustrating how this system effectively prepares players for national representation.
He commended the implementation of a similar developmental approach in Fiji, expressing confidence in the potential for young Fijian talents to shine on the international rugby stage. As the Grassroot 7s tournament comes to a close today, the enthusiasm surrounding the initiative reflects a commitment to fostering the next generation of rugby stars in Fiji.
