Gilbert Vakalalabure, the CEO of the Fiji Sports Council, has announced that the Fiji Airways men’s 7s team will compete in the upcoming FSC Grassroots 7s tournament, set to take place next week at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This exciting development is part of the broader efforts to enhance grassroots rugby in Fiji, with the tournament serving as an essential platform for player selection ahead of the Dubai 7s.
During the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Agricultural Marketing, the tournament’s sponsors, Vakalalabure highlighted the significance of the event. He stated that it would provide an opportunity for national head coach Osea Kolinisau to finalize his team roster for the upcoming Dubai 7s legs, emphasizing the tournament’s role in identifying the best talent for national representation.
“This sevens competition will give the opportunity to the Fiji rugby union to select their best team that goes to Dubai,” Vakalalabure remarked, indicating the potential impact the Grassroots 7s could have on the future of Fijian rugby.
The tournament is expected to feature an exciting lineup, with 16 teams scheduled to compete, including 15 local teams going up against the national side. Some of the teams confirmed to participate are the Fiji 7s, Dominion Brothers, and the FSC Grassroots team. Further details about the tournament will be released by the Fiji Sports Council in the coming days, as anticipation builds for this rugby showcase.
This tournament not only highlights the commitment to nurturing local talent but also sets the stage for a thrilling lead-up to the international Dubai event. The enthusiasm for rugby in Fiji continues to flourish, and this grassroots initiative exemplifies a meaningful step towards strengthening the fabric of the sport in the nation. Fans and participants alike can look forward to an exciting week of rugby that promises to spotlight the best emerging talents in Fiji.
