Fiji is making significant strides in enhancing maritime safety, with the issuance of over 900 Master Boat Licenses across the nation. This increase in certified boat masters is pivotal in bolstering frontline maritime safety, enhancing emergency response capabilities, and expanding the nation’s capacity to patrol its extensive ocean territory.

Lieutenant Colonel Sophie Waters of the British Army emphasized the importance of these licenses, which are conferred through nationally recognized training programs. The recipients acquire essential skills that enable them to respond effectively to emergencies at sea, perform safer vessel operations, and aid law enforcement in combatting transnational crimes.

Waters stated, “We provided a consultant that’s working on Fiji’s maritime security strategy, and it is absolutely important that this strategy is designed by Fiji for Fiji. No other country or person can design a strategy for Fiji except Fiji. We’re delighted to be supporting the consultancy in the background.”

Moreover, the program has fostered improved collaboration among the Fiji Navy, Police, Customs, and community maritime operators, resulting in a coordinated approach to safety and security within Fiji’s waters.

This initiative, backed by partnerships with the United Kingdom and the United Nations Development Programme, highlights Fiji’s dedication to developing local expertise and ensuring that its maritime future is governed by Fijians for the benefit of Fijians. The steps taken not only aim to enhance maritime security but also reflect a strong commitment to building a resilient and sustainable maritime legacy for the nation.
