Kata Wiseman Koli, a 23-year-old from Nawaka, Nadi, celebrated his graduation today with a Bachelor of Media and Communication, reflecting on his journey marked by perseverance amidst various challenges. Koli’s determination to succeed is a testament to his resilience, navigating personal, financial, and academic obstacles throughout his studies.
Well-known in Fiji’s media landscape, Koli juggled full-time employment while pursuing his degree. He faced significant hurdles during his second year, particularly due to the demands of the media industry, university attachment requirements, and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial constraints further complicated his ability to complete compulsory units, leaving him in a tough position.
In the midst of the pandemic in 2021, Koli struggled to finish the required units for his degree. “During covid in 2021, second semester I didn’t finish the four units that were offered, and I had to stay in Suva. When the border opened, I wanted to go back to Nadi to see my family, who were also impacted by the pandemic,” he recounted. His homecoming resulted in illness, which made online studies even more challenging.
As a Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS) recipient, Koli was faced with the additional burden of paying for repeated units out of his own pocket, a challenge given his family’s modest income. He shared, “My mum is a market vendor selling roti and juice, and my dad turned to full-time farming after retiring. We didn’t have much to afford my tuition.”
Acknowledging the financial assistance from his Mataqali trustees of the “Vanua o Nalagi, vua na Momo na Tui Nawaka,” Koli expressed gratitude for their support, which allowed him to complete his degree. He emphasized that the encouragement from his community played a crucial role in his academic success.
Balancing work commitments as a professional photographer for one of Fiji’s leading media houses further complicated his educational journey, often causing him to miss classes. Despite these challenges, Koli dedicated his graduation to God, his parents, extended family, and his communities in Nawaka and Veinuqa. “This success is for them. I got the certificate, but they helped me make this happen,” he reflected.
Koli’s journey serves as an inspiring example for other students facing similar struggles. He encourages them to focus on their goals and avoid distractions. “Think of the sacrifices your parents make. Work towards your goals, avoid drugs and distractions, and make their struggles worth it,” he advised.
Kata Wiseman Koli’s story is one of resilience and determination, highlighting the importance of community support and personal dedication in overcoming adversity. His achievements remind us that with support and perseverance, challenges can be transformed into stepping stones toward success.
