The Fijian government is set to engage in discussions with representatives from the Fiji Muslim League (FML) regarding the situation of residents living in the Nabua squatter settlement, where over 1,000 individuals currently reside. Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, confirmed that the meeting with the League’s executives aims to address the eviction notice previously issued to the residents.
Nalumisa emphasized the government’s intention to provide the tenants with time to facilitate their relocation rather than proceeding with immediate evictions. He stated that the meeting was scheduled to take place either later yesterday or today, and reassured the public that the Government is committed to ensuring that families affected by this situation would receive assistance in finding new land for resettlement.
According to Shelvin Singh, a lawyer for the Fiji Muslim League, previous collaborative meetings involving the squatters, government officials, and members from the Ministry of Housing have been held to address this issue. Discussions have included identifying suitable land for the residents, and it has come to light that some individuals have been subletting their rented premises without residing there themselves.
Singh mentioned that the FML has encouraged the squatters to begin the process of moving out, highlighting that after long periods on the land without payment, it is now time for them to vacate, as the FML plans to develop the area with secured funding.
In support of the efforts to resolve this issue, Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo stated that his ministry is ready to assist the Ministry of Housing in locating appropriate land for the relocated families.
This proactive approach by the government and the FML not only signifies a commitment to addressing housing issues but also presents an opportunity for the affected residents to transition into more secure living arrangements. The focus on collaboration and support indicates a hopeful future for those who will be relocating.
In summary, the government is actively seeking to ensure a smooth transition for Nabua residents facing eviction, emphasizing cooperation with community organizations. This collective effort aims to provide alternatives for families wishing to remain in stable living conditions.
