The Coalition Government of Fiji is taking significant steps to reassure its ex-servicemen, confirming that there will be no cuts to the benefits provided under the Fiji Servicemen’s Aftercare Fund Act of 1944. Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Defence & Veteran Affairs, Biman Prasad, addressed misunderstandings that had been circulating on social media about veterans’ benefits, clarifying that allowances for veterans from World War II, the Malayan Campaign, Operation Grapple, and peacekeeping missions will remain intact.

In a further display of commitment, the 2023/24 budget includes a 15% increase in Aftercare allowances, which highlights the government’s dedication to improving social welfare for its veterans. The allocation to the Aftercare Fund has also increased from $12.4 million to $14.9 million, reinforcing the government’s resolve to provide better financial support to these individuals who have served the nation.

The Aftercare Fund Board, working under the Ministry of Defence, manages the payments to veterans, ensuring that all individuals entitled to benefits receive them as specified by law. This commitment provides reassurance to veterans and their families, fostering trust in the government’s promises.

This proactive affirmation of support emphasizes a larger initiative to enhance social welfare and recognize the sacrifices made by veterans. By ensuring consistent financial assistance and emphasizing their contributions, the government is building confidence within the veteran community and demonstrating responsible stewardship for those who have defended Fiji.

Overall, the Coalition Government’s dedication to veterans sends a hopeful message, reflecting a continuous commitment to their welfare and valuing their important role in the country’s history. Their efforts to provide timely support and uphold financial benefits for veterans is a step towards building a more supportive and appreciative society.
