The Fijian government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the sport of rugby by offering support to the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Rugby Referees Association. Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru announced this initiative during his keynote address at the inaugural Fiji Rugby Referees Awards in Suva over the weekend.
In his remarks at the Vodafone Arena, Saukuru highlighted the vital role that both the Rugby Union and the referees play in the overall success of the sport. He stated, “The government is ready to support the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Rugby Referees Association in moving forward; your contribution drives our success.” This sentiment was met with applause from those present, indicating strong support for enhanced recognition of referees.
Saukuru expressed optimism about the future of rugby refereeing in Fiji, noting that the dedication and hard work of referees could lead to significant advancements within the sport. “I am excited about what the future holds for Fiji’s rugby referees. With your dedication, I am confident we will reach new heights, and our referees will continue to be the proud unsung heroes of the game of rugby,” he said.
He also underscored the critical functions of rugby referees in maintaining the integrity of the game, stating that without their dedication, no match could truly thrive, regardless of the passion involved. “They face the brunt of complaints and endure immense pressure from friends, players, and fans, yet they maintain professionalism and uphold the honour of the game,” Saukuru remarked, commending the commitment and sacrifices made by referees who invest significant time in training and mastering the rules at all levels of the sport.
Acknowledging the support received, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Referees Association, Talemo Waqa, also expressed gratitude towards the minister for his encouragement towards the referees and the Union. This partnership indicates a promising future for rugby in Fiji, ensuring that the sport continues to flourish with a strong emphasis on respect and professionalism.
