Fiji Golf Club’s Exciting Season Opening: A Community’s Passion for Golf Reignited!

The Fiji Golf Club recently kicked off its Season Opening for 2025, marking a vibrant start with 100 golfers participating across 14 teams, all under the sponsorship of Goodmanfielder. Among the participants was Fenton Lutunatabua, a noted Pacific activist and golfer who has reignited his passion for the game after a three-year hiatus. Having first taken up golf as a junior, Lutunatabua is now part of a community group known as Stiff Shafts, which was formed about a decade ago by early enthusiasts, including Lupeti Fihaki and Alex Konrote.

In the spirit of teamwork, the Stiff Shafts team competed in a four-man Ambrose format, emphasizing strategy and collaboration. Lutunatabua expressed his excitement about the inclusive environment, stating, “We have to figure out each other’s strengths and weaknesses and complement that out on the course,” highlighting the unpredictable nature of golf. Despite challenging weather conditions, his focus remained on the camaraderie of the day and the importance of encouraging young people to engage in sports.

This enthusiastic participation aligns with other recent golf events in Fiji, which have witnessed a strong turnout and a commitment to fostering community bonds through sports. For instance, previous tournaments have been celebrated not just for competitive spirit, but also for how they cultivate friendships among players of different ages. Alvin Nair, a participant from one of the weekly Stableford tournaments, noted the camaraderie that develops during these events as vital for both social interaction and nurturing future golfing talent.

Thus, the continual emphasis on youth involvement in golf is a beacon of hope for the sport’s future in Fiji, promising a thriving community of golfers who not only compete but also support one another. As more individuals, like Lutunatabua, rediscover their love for the game, and as mentorship grows within clubs, golf in Fiji looks set for a bright and inclusive future.
