The second annual GM Motors Fiji Golf Classic is currently taking place at Denarau, Nadi, attracting a strong field of 130 players made up of experienced professionals and enthusiastic amateurs.
Among the participants, there are 32 female players and 20 professionals, competing for an enticing prize purse of $20,000 for professionals, while amateurs have the chance to win exciting prizes, including airline tickets provided by Fiji Airways.
Amitesh Chandra, manager of General Golf and Racquet Club and tournament controller, highlighted the importance of this event for amateur golfers. He mentioned, “For the amateurs, this is a world-ranking event. We’ve got two local boys who are world-ranked and will be looking to improve their standings. Any amateur player who wins can also earn a world ranking.”
Looking ahead, Chandra confirmed that there are upcoming international opportunities for Fijian golfers, such as the World Cup in Singapore this October, as well as an invitation to the Asia-Pacific Championship in Dubai. Among Fiji’s competitors are world-ranked players Rajat Rai from New Zealand and Shakeel Pillay, who are preparing for their international outings after gaining considerable experience from competing in tournaments in Melbourne, Japan, and Australia this year.
The GM Motors Fiji Golf Classic will wrap up on Saturday, promising an engaging finish to the tournament filled with competitive spirit and camaraderie.
