The Fiji Golf Classic commenced today at Denarau, Nadi, drawing an impressive mix of seasoned players and local golf enthusiasts. Among the returning participants is renowned Fijian golfer Dinesh Chand, whose remarkable four-decade career includes significant achievements on the Japanese Tour, where he secured five tournament victories.
Chand’s love for golf stemmed from modest beginnings, caddying as a child and learning by observing established names in the sport, including the legendary Vijay Singh. His dedication has allowed him to thrive in the competitive landscape of professional golf, particularly in Japan, where he has spent 40 years.
Despite his long residency in Japan, Chand’s ties to Fiji remain strong. He finds immense joy in reconnecting with friends and fellow golfers at home. Reflecting on the evolution of golf in Fiji, he expressed his surprise and delight at the growth and rising standards of the sport locally. Chand emphasized the importance of dedication and effort in becoming a proficient golfer, while also taking pride in the budding talent among the younger generation in Fiji.
“I played with two beautiful juniors yesterday; it’s just so nice to see them. It reminds me of my days when I was 19 years old. I’m trying my best to help grow the game in Fiji,” he stated. This commitment to nurturing local talent is a significant motivator for Chand’s frequent returns to Fiji.
After participating in the Fiji Golf Classic, which concludes on Saturday, Chand plans to return to Japan to continue playing on the seniors’ tour and prepare for their summer season.
The enthusiasm surrounding the Fiji Golf Classic signals a promising future for golf in Fiji, aligning with recent trends of increased youth participation and initiatives aimed at nurturing young golfers, paving the way for continued growth in the sport.
