The upcoming AA Spares Fiji Amateur Championship is generating excitement as it gears up for its inaugural round this weekend at Denarau. With the previous champion, Abid Hussein, having turned professional, a new victor will emerge from this year’s competition.
Notable contenders include Shakeell Pillay, who is known for his recent success in prior tournaments, Australian-based golfer Adish Kumar, and Ba School’s director Asish Chand. Overall, the tournament will showcase a total of 50 registered players, including five women.
Significantly, the championship is recognized as a world-ranking event, allowing participants who finish with scores of 6 over par or better across 54 holes to earn rankings. At present, Adish Kumar is the only player already ranked, but his Australian citizenship precludes him from being eligible for the Fijian rankings.
To promote youth involvement in golf, Golf Fiji is offering complimentary entry to junior players, which emphasizes their dedication to fostering young talent within the sport. Golf Fiji President Amitesh Chandra expressed gratitude towards AA Spares for their continued support, which has been instrumental in developing the sport in Fiji.
Chandra noted, “We are thankful to Salen Naidu and AA Spares for their ongoing commitment to golf, especially for fostering young talent. Their backing ensures that we continue to see growth and opportunity in the sport.”
The championship is scheduled to begin at 7 AM on Saturday, promising a day filled with competition and potential for outstanding displays of skill in golf. The event not only highlights the enthusiasm within the golfing community but also showcases the bright future ahead for the sport in Fiji, especially with initiatives aimed at nurturing young players.
