GOLF Fiji has concluded one of its most remarkable seasons, marked by significant international achievements, a surge in junior participation, and enhanced support for local clubs. President Amitesh Chandra noted that 2025 was a landmark year, featuring six world ranking events—the highest ever conducted in a single year in the country’s history.
A historic milestone was reached when 21-year-old Raina Kumar became the first female golfer from Fiji to obtain a world ranking. In addition, fellow national representative Shakeel Pillay demonstrated rapid improvement, ascending from approximately 4,000th to near the 1,000 mark in just a few months.
“This year has been a very successful one for Golf Fiji,” stated Chandra. He emphasized the robust development of their elite squad and highlighted that there are now over 50 active junior players across the nation. The increase in junior participation has been largely driven by Novotel, which, along with a PGA professional from Fiji, has played a crucial role in implementing development programs.
In terms of funding, Golf Fiji allocated approximately $20,000 to several affiliated clubs including Ba, Nadi, Pacific Harbour, Novotel, Lautoka, and Denarau to support development at all levels. Plans for a similar allocation in 2026 are already underway.
Despite these advances, Chandra acknowledged that securing sponsorship remains a significant challenge. “Golf is a minority sport in Fiji, and many stakeholders still don’t fully understand the game,” he explained. While there are a number of sponsors, most are golfers themselves. He pointed out that if leadership within a company does not participate in golf, they may be hesitant to lend their support.
Looking to the future, Golf Fiji is set to kick off its 2026 calendar with a national junior event at Novotel on January 10, followed by the Fiji Amateur Championship in March. The highlight of the season, the Fiji Open, is scheduled to coincide with Fiji Day weekend at Fiji Golf Club.
Chandra concluded by noting that while Golf Fiji can establish programs, provide coaching, and create opportunities, the ultimate responsibility for participation rests with individuals. This reflects a hopeful outlook as efforts continue to promote golf across Fiji and engage more players in the sport.
