The FIJI Amateur Boxing Golden Gloves competition is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with organizers actively searching for a larger venue to accommodate the anticipated 30 boxers. Head coach Cam Todd confirmed that the event was postponed from last week in pursuit of a more spacious location. Should a suitable venue not be found, the competition will take place at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva.
Todd highlighted that the Golden Gloves will feature the top four boxers in each weight division, showcasing many of Fiji’s premier athletes. The competition promises an exciting program with approximately 30 bouts expected each day, delivering thrilling boxing action for spectators.
“The main aim of the competition is our national championship, but it also serves as a selection event for the upcoming year,” Todd explained. He expressed pride in the achievements of Fijian boxers in international competitions over the past year, noting a significant highlight at the World Championship where boxer Aminiasi ranked in the top 10, alongside three others finishing in the top 20 globally. This is a remarkable accomplishment, especially as the sport continues to grow.
Todd also mentioned the increasing involvement of Australian boxers in competitions in Fiji, contributing to the strengthening local boxing scene. He expressed particular joy over the rising number of clubs and female boxers participating in the sport.
In a heartfelt appeal, Todd urged fans and supporters to continue their backing of Fijian boxers, emphasizing the crucial role their support plays in the athletes’ success. He extended an open invitation for everyone to attend the Golden Gloves competition, encouraging the community to rally behind the team as they strive for excellence in the ring. This event not only showcases the talent within Fiji but also reflects the growing popularity and support for boxing in the nation.
