The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association marked the first day of its Golden Gloves competition yesterday at the Stanely Brown Gym in Walu Bay, Suva. National coach Cam Todd expressed his enthusiasm for the nine semi-final bouts that took place, noting the promise of thrilling finals scheduled for today.
“There were some good bouts today, it’s setting us for some nice finals tomorrow, so we have 21 bouts from sub-junior all the way to elite featuring a number of our athletes who are vying for the Commonwealth Games,” Todd said, emphasizing the stakes involved for many competitors.
Notable among the competitors was national representative Iokimi Navuasese, who delivered a commanding performance to reach the finals, where he is set to face fellow national rep Stephen Ledua. Despite his victory, Navuasese felt his performance fell short of expectations. “It’s been a long time since I boxed, and I’m not really happy with my performance today. Tomorrow I will need to step up, especially against a quality opponent like Stephen Ledua,” he admitted.
The finals are expected to be a showcase of talent and determination, as they serve as qualifiers for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Coach Todd is urging fans to attend and support the athletes, encouraging them to witness the emergence of Fiji’s future boxing stars at the Golden Gloves Championships. With anticipation building for today’s matches, there is a sense of excitement that resonates through the boxing community and beyond, highlighting the dedication and skill of these athletes.
