Queensland’s tourism industry is poised for a notable enhancement following Fiji Airways’ announcement of new direct flights connecting the Gold Coast and Nadi. This development is expected to have a considerable impact on travel and tourism, bringing increased international visitor numbers to Queensland.

Queensland’s Tourism Minister, Andrew Powell, expressed pride in supporting the new route through the government’s Destination 2045 initiative, which aims to connect Queensland to the world more strategically. Powell emphasized their commitment to expanding flight options and facilitating easier travel.

Set to launch on Thursday, June 11, 2026, the new service will create a direct air link between Fiji and the Gold Coast. This connection is anticipated to strengthen the relationship between the two regions and unveil new opportunities for international guests.

Amelia Evans, the Chief Executive Officer of Queensland Airports Limited, welcomed this announcement, noting that Gold Coast Airport was excited about the prospects of the new route. Evans highlighted that Australians enjoy visiting the stunning islands of Fiji and that this flight will simplify their holiday planning.

In addition to benefiting Australian travelers, the service is expected to attract more Fijian visitors to Australia, particularly those looking to reconnect with family and friends on the Gold Coast. Evans emphasized that the direct flight would enhance the overall travel experience, as Gold Coast Airport offers a smoother transition for passengers compared to larger capital city airports.

This new Fiji-Gold Coast route is also projected to create additional travel opportunities through Nadi to destinations in the United States and Canada, potentially bringing tens of thousands of more travelers to Queensland. With an estimated economic boost of $51 million anticipated for the state, local businesses, including cafes, hotels, and tourism operators, are likely to reap the benefits of this new aviation link.
