The Fiji Darts Association is preparing for the upcoming South Pacific Darts Championship, which will be held in Suva from January 20-26. This event represents a significant milestone for Fiji, marking its second foray into international darts competition, the first being a tri-nation tournament featuring New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in the 1990s.
Fiji’s President, Edward Roxburgh, acknowledges the high level of competition expected at the championship, particularly from defending champions, the Cook Islands. Their team is anticipated to include many skilled players who have experience competing in New Zealand. Roxburgh noted, “Their standard is high. Some of their players could probably play on the PDC world darts stage if they wanted to.”
Despite the challenges that lie ahead, Roxburgh maintains a hopeful outlook for the Fijian team. He stated, “This is only Fiji’s second international ever. We’d love to win, but it’s going to be tough. This will be part of our international play games.”
The championship has also received support from leading darts brand Short Darts from New Zealand and the Metro Gym in Suva, further enhancing the event’s profile and resources.
This event shines a light on the growing interest in darts in Fiji and the potential for the sport to develop on an international level. It presents a unique opportunity for local players to gain invaluable experience and exposure. With the right support and determination, Fiji can carve out its place in the world of darts.
