Fiji Gears Up for Remembrance Day: Honoring Peacekeepers at Suva Ceremony

Preparations for the 2025 Remembrance Day are currently underway, with events planned to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace. The Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs emphasizes the significance of this annual commemoration, describing it as a solemn occasion to recognize the service and sacrifices of fallen heroes who contributed to restoring and maintaining peace in the Pacific.

Remembrance Day, observed on November 11 across Commonwealth nations, honors armed forces members who have lost their lives in the line of duty since the First World War. This year’s national commemoration is set to take place at the National War Memorial in Suva tomorrow at 11 am.

Permanent Secretary Mason Smith conveys that this occasion prompts the nation to pause in reflection on the courage and sacrifice of those who laid down their lives for peace. The event intends to provide transportation for veterans from the Republic of Fiji Navy’s Stanley Brown Base in Walu Bay to the Flea Market for the city march, culminating at Ratu Sukuna Park and Vusuya Road for the official ceremony.

The poignant memories shared by attendees of past Remembrance Days further enhance the collective experience of gratitude. For instance, Lavenia Volaukitoga, who has honored her late husband each year for three decades, was accompanied by her granddaughter who aspires to uphold her family’s legacy. Volaukitoga lost her husband during a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, and her commitment to remembrance reflects the enduring bonds of family and resilience against hardship.

The emotional tributes witnessed in previous commemorations underscore the shared grief and strength of families from all walks of life, illustrating the commitment to honor those who served. These narratives highlight not only the sacrifices made by service members but also the hopeful aspirations carried forward by future generations, fostering a deeper appreciation for the values of courage and dedication that define the spirit of Remembrance Day.
