Fiji is preparing to host its inaugural mountain reggae music festival, “Reggae by the River,” this July at the scenic Namosi Eco Retreat, coinciding with the retreat’s 10th anniversary. Founder Dan Sovatabua, hailing from the Navunikabi village, expressed excitement about the upcoming celebration after navigating numerous challenges over the past decade, including regulatory approvals and the impacts of the pandemic.
The festival promises a rich lineup with live performances from local reggae bands and traditional dance groups, alongside delectable highland cuisine featuring fresh mountain dishes. Sovatabua encourages attendees to immerse themselves in the experience by camping overnight at the retreat, situated in the beautiful mountainous region of Namosi.
To enhance accessibility, festival-goers can take advantage of package deals that include transport from Suva, featuring early-morning river crossings. For those opting to drive themselves, secure parking is guaranteed.
While Sovatabua is yet to secure sponsors, he is actively seeking partnerships from businesses and corporations to support various aspects of the festival, such as transport and staging. Beyond the music, Sovatabua emphasizes that the festival aims to honor the rich cultural heritage of Namosi, celebrate its abundant local food, and showcase the stunning natural landscape and community spirit.
“Reggae by the River” is scheduled for July 25 at the Namosi Eco Retreat, heralding a joyful celebration of music and culture in Fiji’s highlands. This festival not only aims to entertain but also celebrates a decade of resilience and community spirit in the face of challenges.
