Fiji Gears Up for Historic Girmit Celebration: What to Expect?

A government delegation has sought blessings from Turaga Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate in preparation for the 146th Girmit anniversary celebration, which is scheduled to take place next month in Labasa. Acting Permanent Secretary for Multi Ethnic Affairs, Reshmi Kumari, announced that they performed a traditional sevusevu during their visit, which was warmly accepted by Ratu Jone, who granted his blessings for the upcoming events.

Kumari noted that preparations are already underway for the Girmit celebrations, set for May 10-12, with a detailed program virtually ready. This year’s commemoration will be hosted at Subrail Park and will feature the President of Fiji inaugurating the opening ceremony on Saturday.

The significance of these celebrations lies in recognizing the contributions of Girmityas and their descendants, serving not only as a remembrance of their historical struggles but also fostering unity within Fiji’s multicultural community. The celebrations promise to reflect a spirit of inclusivity and collaboration, resonating with previous initiatives aimed at acknowledging Fiji’s diverse heritage.

Past articles have indicated the government’s commitment to cultural preservation, including a budget of $200,000 for the Girmit Commemoration and plans to establish a dedicated museum to honor the legacy of the Girmitiyas. With themes such as “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” these events highlight the importance of reevaluating the historical narratives that shape Fiji’s identity.

As the nation gears up for the commemoration, there is a hopeful outlook for fostering a more inclusive and united Fiji, emphasizing cultural pride and shared heritage among its citizens. This year’s Girmit celebrations not only promise to pay homage to the past but also aim to strengthen community bonds and promote a harmonious future for all Fijians.
