Fiji is gearing up to enhance its disaster preparedness as plans are underway for Exercise Bougainville 2026. The initiative aims to assess and improve the country’s response capabilities to disasters and security challenges while fostering cooperation among government agencies.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mosese Bulitavu, has been updated by senior officers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces regarding the scope and significance of this upcoming national exercise. Notably, this drill will also serve as a major Land Forces Field Training Exercise for the RFMF, focusing on both disaster response and internal security measures.
The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management is set to take an active role throughout the exercise. Bulitavu emphasized the timely nature of the initiative, particularly in light of the recently enacted National Disaster Risk Management Act. This exercise presents a vital opportunity to evaluate the country’s disaster readiness, inter-agency collaboration, and emergency response systems within the context of the new legal framework.
In his statements, Bulitavu reaffirmed his Ministry’s dedication to collaborating closely with the RFMF and other partner agencies. He highlighted the importance of maintaining robust and responsive national systems to safeguard communities, especially those in rural and maritime regions during times of crisis.
With this exercise, Fiji aims to not only fortify its emergency management protocols but also foster a sense of preparedness and resilience among its citizens, ensuring a collective response to any potential threats in the future.
