The 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, which will take place from August 24-30 in Ahmedabad, India, serves as a pivotal qualifying event for athletes from Weightlifting Fiji. Securing a gold medal at this competition will grant direct qualification for the Commonwealth Games set to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2026.
Head coach Henry Elder is optimistic about the team’s chances following their outstanding performance at the recent 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, where Fiji clinched 15 medals and shattered 13 records. With the strong momentum from that success, Elder confirms that the team has already resumed training, focusing on refining skills based on the previous competition’s assessments.
Elder elaborated, “We are currently evaluating our performances from the latest event, and both athletes and coaches are providing input to identify improvement areas.” The championship will feature events for both genders across Senior, Junior as well as Youth categories.
Fiji has a rich history in the Commonwealth Games, having previously won medals in the competitions held in 2014, 2018, and 2022. Elder emphasized the team’s aim to maximize gold medal wins during the championship to ensure a robust representation in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. “While we cherish our experiences at the Pacific Games, our focus is firmly on the Commonwealth Games and beyond. We are entrusting in our leadership and God for guidance,” he stated.
The anticipation surrounding the championship is heightened due to Fiji’s strong weightlifting credentials and their promising track record, which enhances hope for remarkable performances in upcoming competitions. This dedication to excellence not only positions Weightlifting Fiji favorably but also inspires a spirit of determination within the nation as athletes aim for success on the international stage.
