Fiji Gears Up for 2027 Population and Housing Census

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics is actively preparing for the National Population and Housing Census scheduled for next year, marking a significant event that takes place every ten years. On the occasion of World Statistics Day, Chief Executive Kemueli Naiqama emphasized the bureau’s commitment to ensuring that comprehensive planning and preparations are in place for the upcoming census.

Naiqama remarked, “We are gearing up for something big coming up, which is the census 2027, with our target timeline around September 2027.” He highlighted that the bureau is currently assembling teams into various committees to focus on the essential phases of planning, preparation, and implementation. The Assistant Statistics Minister acknowledged that this preparation reflects years of dedicated effort, noting substantial improvements in the bureau’s operations since their appointment.

This proactive approach aligns with broader strategic developments observed within the Fiji Bureau of Statistics, including discussions around enhancing data collection and management capabilities to fulfill the rising demand for accurate statistics. There is a concerted push for improving data governance and independence, pivotal in guiding policy formulation across various sectors.

In previous initiatives highlighted this year, the bureau announced plans to boost staffing and funding, responding to growing demands from the government, private sector, and international partners for timely and reliable data. This commitment also extends to collaborative efforts with organizations such as UNICEF to fortify the statistical infrastructure in Fiji.

Despite challenges, including existing data gaps related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators, Fiji is taking meaningful strides to improve the reliability of its statistical systems. The combination of increased funding, enhanced governance, and collaborative data efforts is set to foster more effective monitoring and informed decision-making for Fiji’s development.

Overall, the initiatives undertaken by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics signify a hopeful outlook towards progressive development, ensuring that the forthcoming census not only accurately captures the population dynamics but also supports strategic planning for sustainable growth in the years to come. By solidifying their statistical foundation, Fiji is poised to enhance its policy-making capacities and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
