The Fiji national futsal team is in an important preparatory phase as they adapt to the coaching style of new head coach José Gerardo. The Portuguese coach brings a wealth of international experience and is now focused on enhancing the capabilities of the team ahead of forthcoming international tournaments.
Meli Yasawa, the Fiji FA Head of Development for the southern region, has shared that the squad has been undergoing intensive training for seven weeks, with sessions conducted twice during weekends and regularly throughout the week for players based in the southern regions. This rigorous approach has also included selections from the western and northern leagues to join the national camp.
Yasawa highlighted the players’ enthusiasm during training, noting, “We can see that the boys are enjoying the training sessions and trying to understand what his philosophy is and what his plan is in getting this team ready for the upcoming matches.” Although there have been minor language barriers, the team’s ability to adapt has allowed them to engage fully with Gerardo’s coaching methods.
Notably, Gerardo’s international experience promises to give Fiji a competitive edge as they prepare for significant regional futsal fixtures. This hiring follows a transition period for Fijian futsal, which saw prior coach Jerry Sam stepping down to focus on personal commitments. Sam emphasized the importance of investment and community support in nurturing young talents during his tenure.
The positive outlook for Fiji’s futsal program embodies a commitment to developing skill and fostering an inclusive environment for local players. With a dedicated coaching staff and the enthusiasm of young athletes, Fiji’s futsal scene is expected to see exciting advancements as they gear up for the challenges ahead. The collaborative spirit and ongoing development efforts signal a bright future for the sport in the nation.
