National Futsal Coach Jerry Sam is optimistic about the future of Futsal in Fiji, predicting that 2025 will be a significant year for the sport. After witnessing impressive performances during the Extra Supermarket Futsal Inter-District Championship (IDC), Sam expressed gratitude towards Extra for sponsoring the tournament, highlighting its crucial role in fostering the development of Futsal in the country.
Reflecting on the future, Sam stated, “If we want to see our futsal team improve, we have to invest in this, and I’m really thankful for Extra.” He emphasized the upcoming challenges, including several OFC futsal championships and the national hosting of the club championship next year, signaling a busy and pivotal year ahead.
During the IDC, Sam spotted several promising talents whom he plans to invite to the training camp scheduled for March, aiming to assemble a squad of 30 players. However, he also extends an invitation to players who did not participate in the IDC to try out for the national team.
Sam shared, “I kindly ask if those who are not part of this IDC, to come next year for open trials for men’s futsal.” The champions from Suva will represent Fiji in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) championship, and Sam has offered his technical assistance to the club if needed.
With a focus on youth and stamina, he stated that he is looking for players who can endure the rigors of a 40-minute match rather than relying solely on experienced veterans. The plan is to finalize a pool of 20 players over six weeks before narrowing it down to the final squad.
Overall, Coach Jerry Sam’s enthusiasm and strategic planning for the future of Futsal in Fiji present a hopeful outlook for the sport’s development. The supportive role of sponsors like Extra and the cultivation of young talent could pave the way for significant achievements in the soon-to-come tournaments.
