Fiji’s national futsal coach, Jerry Sam, has expressed optimism about the upcoming year for Fiji Futsal, highlighting that 2025 will be pivotal for the sport in the country. His enthusiasm follows the performance of players at the recently concluded Extra Supermarket Futsal Inter-District Championship (IDC).

Coach Sam praised Extra for sponsoring the tournament, emphasizing the importance of investment in the development of futsal. He stated, “If we want to see our futsal team improve, we have to invest in this. I’m really thankful for Extra,” acknowledging how sponsorships contribute significantly to the growth of the sport.

Looking ahead, Sam is preparing for a busy year filled with various Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) championships and the hosting of the club championship in Fiji. He revealed that he has identified several talented players from the IDC whom he plans to invite to a training camp scheduled for March. This training camp is set to include a 30-member squad, along with trials for players not participating in the IDC, demonstrating an inclusive approach to talent selection.

Sam also mentioned the futsal IDC champions, Suva, who will soon compete in the OFC championship in the capital city. He offered his assistance to the Suva team, ready to lend his technical expertise if needed, which exemplifies a spirit of collaboration within the sport.

For the training camp, Coach Sam aims to focus on younger players capable of maintaining high energy and performance levels throughout matches. His plan includes finalizing a 20-player roster over six weeks and then narrowing it down to the final team.

This proactive approach to player development and competition readiness could lay a strong foundation for Fiji Futsal’s future success. Sam’s commitment to creating pathways for emerging talent is promising for the sport’s growth in the country.

Overall, there is a strong sense of hope and investment in the potential of Fiji Futsal, with opportunities for new players to showcase their skills, suggesting that the future could be bright for the national team.
