Fiji’s national futsal team is gearing up for an exciting year ahead in 2025, according to coach Jerry Sam. Following impressive performances during the Extra Supermarket Futsal Inter-District Championship (IDC), Sam expressed his optimism about the future of the sport in the country.
During the IDC, Sam commended Extra Supermarket for their sponsorship, emphasizing the importance of such support in the development of futsal in Fiji. “To enhance our futsal team, we must invest in it. I’m really thankful for Extra,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Sam highlighted a busy schedule for the team, which includes significant tournaments like the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) championships and a club championship to be hosted in Fiji. “I’ve identified some talents within this tournament that I can invite for the training camp,” he noted, planning to assemble a training squad of around 30 players by March.
Additionally, for athletes who did not get a chance to participate in the IDC but wish to showcase their skills, Sam is organizing open trials next year. “I encourage those who were not part of this IDC to attend the open trials for men’s futsal,” he said.
The championship-winning team, Suva, will represent Fiji at the upcoming OFC championships in their home city. Sam has also offered his coaching assistance to the Suva team if needed. He aims to focus on younger players who can sustain their performance on the court for the duration of games, indicating a shift towards youth development in the sport.
In conclusion, the forthcoming year is poised to be transformative for Fiji’s futsal scene, with investments in player development and strategic support shaping a promising future for the sport.
Hopeful remarks from Coach Sam and the opportunity for new talents to emerge through open trials suggest a nurturing environment for futsal in Fiji, signaling a bright outlook for the sport’s evolution.
