Fiji Futsal is gearing up for an exciting year in 2025, according to national coach Jerry Sam. He expressed his admiration for the players’ performances during the Extra Supermarket Futsal Inter-District Championship (IDC), especially highlighting the significant impact of the tournament’s sponsor, Extra.
Sam emphasized the importance of investing in futsal to enhance the national team’s performance. He remarked on the upcoming challenges, including the OFC championship, and noted that Fiji will also host the club championship next year. His keen observation during the IDC led him to identify promising talent, which he plans to incorporate into a training camp.
Next March, Sam aims to assemble a squad of about 30 players for training, and he is extending an invitation for an open trial for those who weren’t part of the IDC but wish to showcase their skills to join the national side. He specifically encourages young, active players rather than seasoned veterans, as he believes they can endure the demands of a 40-minute match.
Additionally, the IDC champions, Suva, will compete at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) championship in Suva. Sam has offered his support to the team, providing his technical guidance as needed. He intends to finalize a core group of around 20 players after approximately six weeks of training before narrowing down to the final team.
This proactive approach by Coach Sam and the potential influx of new talent bode well for the future of Futsal in Fiji, indicating a bright horizon for the sport. The community’s enthusiasm and involvement, along with dedicated sponsorships, create an encouraging environment for the advancement of Futsal in the region.
