Jerry Sam, head coach of Fiji Futsal and Beach Soccer, has resigned from his position to return to the Solomon Islands due to personal commitments. This decision ends a nearly three-year period of leadership with the Fiji Football Association, during which Sam managed both men’s and women’s futsal teams, as well as the men’s beach soccer team.
Fiji FA President Rajesh Patel announced Sam’s departure following a council meeting in Suva. He noted that Sam is returning home to resolve a land issue and emphasized the association’s understanding of such personal circumstances. Patel stated, “We cannot hold them down, and if they’d like to move, we have to give them the right to move.” He also acknowledged that while players and officials have the option to leave, it indicates a lack of commitment to remain if they wish to pursue other opportunities.
As Sam takes his leave after leading teams in various regional and international competitions, Patel expressed an eagerness for potential successors, highlighting that the change could usher in fresh ideas and perspective for the program. He assured that the Fiji FA would actively seek a replacement within a month, inviting anyone interested to consider the role.
This transition in coaching presents a unique opportunity for the Fiji Football Association to rejuvenate its approach to futsal and beach soccer, fostering a vibrant environment for players and fans alike. The association’s openness to new leadership reflects a positive and adaptive mindset, laying the foundation for the future of Fiji’s football programs.
