The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has taken steps to dispel rumors concerning the mandatory Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) requirement for mobile wallet accounts. This clarification comes in light of a public notice released last week, which detailed an extension of the compliance deadline for mobile wallet users until January 31, 2026.

FRCS clarified that the penalties outlined in Section 34A (2) of the Tax Administration Act, which include potential penalties and imprisonment, are applicable solely to business taxpayers. The authority reassured the public that these measures do not affect individual users of electronic wallet services.

In its efforts to enhance communication and outreach, FRCS has expanded its programs significantly, particularly in remote and maritime areas, by partnering with various government agencies. The service encourages taxpayers to secure their TINs through multiple channels, including the nationwide outreach initiatives and the Taxpayer Online Services Portal, which allows remote registration and issuance without the need for an in-person visit to an FRCS office.

Emphasizing the intent behind the mandatory TIN requirement, FRCS stated that these measures are aimed at bolstering compliance and risk management rather than serving as a tool for increasing revenue or introducing new taxes. The requirement is designed primarily to strengthen taxpayer profiling, help identify potential tax evasion, and support broader national anti-money laundering initiatives. The FRCS highlighted that similar identification protocols are already standard practice within the commercial banking sector, reflecting a trend towards enhanced user verification across financial services.

With these initiatives, FRCS is working to ensure that compliance remains accessible for all citizens, thereby easing administrative burdens and fostering a more streamlined tax process.
