The recent return of the first group of Fijian volunteers from France, following a seven-month exchange under the Fonds Équipe France Rapid (FEF-R) program, highlights a significant step in Fiji–France relations. Organized by France Volontaires and funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this initiative focuses on leveraging sports for development and inclusivity, specifically targeting sports like table tennis and rugby, to make them accessible for women and people with disabilities.
The volunteers were celebrated in a gathering at the French Residence in Suva, attended by French Embassy officials and partners who contributed to the program’s success. Notably, this program enhances bilateral ties through cultural sharing and youth empowerment, reflecting the ongoing collaborative spirit between Fiji and France.
Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the French Embassy, Mr. Benjamin Delannoy, underscored the initiative’s importance in promoting international cooperation and youth empowerment. He also expressed intentions to facilitate reciprocal exchanges for French volunteers to experience similar opportunities in Fiji, reinforcing a two-way cultural and professional exchange.
As the program progresses, there is a concerted effort to establish a robust legal framework to ensure these exchanges’ sustainability and safety, as emphasized by France Volontaires Support Officer Blandine Antonietti. The program is envisioned to inspire further youth engagement, fostering cultural sharing and solidarity among different communities.
The initiative complements other collaborative efforts between the two nations, such as France’s earlier involvement in fostering rugby development in Fiji, which reflects a long-standing partnership in sports and cultural endeavors. Ultimately, these programs underline the potential for mutual growth and understanding, setting the stage for future generations to engage in meaningful international cooperation.
