On the eve of an exciting rugby test match in Bordeaux between Fiji and France, a notable delegation from the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), including Julian Vulakoro, Fiji’s ambassador for sport to France and Europe, John Ian Nasson Sanday, the FRU President, and CEO Koli Sewabu, met with French Minister of Sports, Marina Ferrari. This marks a significant visit as it is the first time for Vulakoro and the return of Sewabu after 26 years.
During their meeting, the FRU acknowledged the positive contributions of the “Cap Rugby” program, initiated by the Agence Française de Développement, which aims to develop rugby at the grassroots level. Furthermore, they discussed FRU’s newly launched “give back” initiative designed to foster bilateral cooperation between Fiji and France, enhancing their close relationship through sport.
A focal point of the discussion was the expansion of women’s rugby in Fiji. The FRU shared its plans to promote women’s rugby starting with development programs at school levels. This initiative is part of broader efforts to cultivate rugby talent and generate interest in the sport among young girls.
The meeting not only highlighted the long-term camaraderie between France and Fiji, both of which share a deep-rooted passion for rugby, but also underscored the growing partnership nourished by cultural exchange and mutual respect. This positive engagement reflects the potential for future collaborations that could further enhance rugby development in Fiji and strengthen ties with France.
Building on previous exchanges like the visit of Abdelatif Benazzi, Vice-President of the French Rugby Federation, and discussions with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, it is evident that sports diplomacy is becoming a vital vehicle for enhancing international relationships. These collaborative efforts create a hopeful outlook for the future of both nations in utilizing rugby as a bridge for cultural and sporting growth. With initiatives underway for youth engagement and support for women in sports, there is much to look forward to for Fijian rugby on the global stage.
