In a heartfelt ceremony reflecting the values of forgiveness and reconciliation, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, Deputy Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, presented a traditional kamunaga, a whale’s tooth, to the family of the late former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. This significant gesture took place at the Qarase family home in Mavana Village, located on Vanuabalavu island in Lau.

Commodore Tawake addressed the gathering with a message emphasizing the importance of forgiveness in life. He expressed the military’s desire to seek forgiveness from the Qarase family, acknowledging the complicated past shared between them.

During the emotionally charged moment, Mrs. Leba Qarase, the widow of the late Prime Minister, graciously accepted the kamunaga. She conveyed that her family had long ago forgiven the military for past grievances, even while her husband was still alive. “I have accepted the kamunaga, with a grateful heart and I am so happy for this event today,” she stated, highlighting her family’s willingness to move forward.

This ceremony not only honors the memory of Laisenia Qarase but also symbolizes a step toward healing and unity within the community. The willingness to forgive and foster connections can serve as an inspiring model for others as Fiji continues on its journey of reconciliation.
