FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A weak trough of low pressure over the Northern Division, together with a moist easterly wind flow across the islands, will bring scattered showers and periods of cloud to much of Fiji. The main features through tomorrow are occasional heavy falls in the north, and afternoon thunderstorms with heavy rain over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Moderate easterly winds and moderate seas are expected across the group.

The Northern Division — including Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni — will see occasional showers with isolated heavy falls. Those showers are expected to ease later tomorrow. Temperatures in the north are generally warm, with Labasa forecast to reach about 34°C tomorrow and other northern centres around the low 30s.

Across the main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, as well as the central and eastern coastal districts (Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra‑Rakiraki and parts of Bua, Macuata and Cakaudrove), expect cloudy periods with some showers and a risk of afternoon thunderstorms producing heavy falls. Localised heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding of low‑lying and flood‑prone areas. Sample forecasts include Navua/Suva/Nausori with a maximum near 32°C and Nadi/Lautoka/Ba reaching about 33°C.

The outer island groups — Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu — are forecast to see cloudy periods with some showers, while the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups are generally fine apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers. Rotuma will remain under a moist easterly flow with cloudy periods, some showers and isolated thunderstorms; winds there are expected to be moderate to fresh with moderate to rough seas. Typical overnight lows are in the mid‑20s and daytime highs mostly around the low 30s.

Practical points: moderate easterly winds and moderate seas are expected, but mariners should note Rotuma’s locally rougher conditions. People in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas should be aware of the potential for localised flash flooding where heavy falls occur. Showers in the north are likely to ease later tomorrow while the threat of afternoon thunderstorms remains over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
