A contingent from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been deployed to assist in the recovery efforts following the severe 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, last week.
During a briefing with the soldiers, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka emphasized the critical role they will play in helping restore the lives of over 100,000 people affected by the disaster. He commended their expertise and experience, urging them to share their knowledge with the main support teams expected to follow.
“Help your fellow brothers and sisters in this time of need,” Ditoka stated, reminding them of the importance of their mission. He further advised personnel to be prepared for the possibility of an extended deployment, reflecting the uncertainties regarding the situation on the ground.
This deployment comes at a time when Vanuatu faces numerous challenges, including aftershocks from the earthquake and the looming threat of a cyclone, as noted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
In summary, the commitment of the RFMF to assist Vanuatu during this critical time demonstrates solidarity and humanitarian support among nations. It is a reminder of the resilience that communities can build in the face of natural disasters and the crucial role that neighboring countries can play in recovery efforts.
The ongoing efforts to support Vanuatu and its people highlight the strength of international cooperation in disaster response, fostering a sense of hope and solidarity during difficult times.
