The Fiji men’s football team’s aspirations for a spot in the FIFA 2026 World Cup faced a significant blow after it was confirmed that captain Roy Krishna will miss the crucial semi-final match against New Zealand in March next year. Roy sustained a grade 3 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury while competing for his club, Odisha FC, in the Indian Super League. Consequently, this injury has prematurely concluded his season, necessitating surgery later this month and an intense rehabilitation process.

At 37 years old, Roy has been a pivotal figure for the national team during the World Cup play-offs, having scored crucial goals that propelled Fiji forward in the competition. He netted the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory against the Solomon Islands, followed by a score in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Papua New Guinea, and yet another goal that secured a 1-1 draw against New Caledonia, helping Fiji qualify for the semi-finals. With 44 international goals to his name, Roy has been instrumental for Fiji over the years.

His absence presents a challenge for the remaining strikers, including Sairusi Nalaubu, Merrill Nand, Thomas Dunn, Setareki Hughes, and Nabil Begg, as they prepare to fill the void. Despite his disappointment, Roy remains optimistic about his recovery and the team’s potential. “This is part of football. Injuries happen, and while it’s a short setback, my focus now is on getting better, stronger, and back on the field,” he stated, highlighting his determination to support his teammates from the sidelines.

Roy recognizes the significance of the upcoming match but has expressed complete confidence in his team. The Fiji squad is united in its pursuit of success on the international stage, determined to maintain their momentum despite this setback. The football community is eagerly anticipating Roy’s recovery, hopeful for his return to action.

Odisha FC head coach, Sergio Lobera, expressed sadness over Roy’s injury, calling him an incredible player and professional. He emphasized the importance of moving forward while acknowledging the emotional impact of such setbacks, underscoring the resilience required in sports.

This situation, while challenging, presents an opportunity for the team to rally together and showcase their skills. With Roy’s leadership, even from a distance, the Fiji squad aims to make a significant impact in the play-offs. Fans are rallying behind both their captain and the entire team, hopeful for a positive outcome in the forthcoming matches and for Roy’s eventual return to the pitch.
