The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) has launched new grassroots goalkeeper training programs at its academies in Ba, Labasa, and Suva. This initiative aims to develop the next generation of football talent by providing young goalkeepers with essential technical and tactical skills necessary for competitive play.

In Ba, the training will be led by Sanaila Waqanicakau, Fiji’s national goalkeeper coach, who brings a wealth of experience from high-level football. In Labasa, Shamal Kumar, a former national goalkeeper and Labasa player, will guide the training. Kumar’s deep understanding of the game is expected to inspire and motivate young players in the northern region. Additionally, Ricardo Ferrando Gusta, a seasoned goalkeeper coach from Spain, will offer his international expertise at the Suva Academy, sharing advanced techniques and strategies relevant to European football.

This grassroots program is a crucial part of Fiji FA’s broader effort to enhance football talent at foundational levels, particularly focusing on specialized positions like goalkeeping. Sushil Singh, Head of Talent Development South, emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation for aspiring athletes and expressed confidence in the potential outcomes of the initiative.

The initiative is open to all young players across the country who are interested in pursuing a career as goalkeepers. Singh urges parents and prospective players to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors, highlighting that this program will not only refine athletic skills but also promote personal development through teamwork and discipline.

Overall, the launch of these grassroots goalkeeper training programs represents a hopeful step forward for football in Fiji. By nurturing youth talent, Fiji FA is contributing positively to community engagement and the future of the sport, fostering a generation of skilled athletes who may one day shine on both domestic and international stages.
