The Fiji national football team, coached by Ashif Khan, is currently in second place in the premier division of the Tebara Nations Muslim World Cup Championship 2024, taking place at Churchill Park in Lautoka. After their first two matches, Fiji, the defending champions, secured a 2-0 victory against Australia on the tournament’s opening day and then played to a goalless draw against the United States. They have amassed four points, trailing leaders New Zealand, who have six points from two wins.
Coach Khan acknowledged the strength of the competition, noting that all participating teams are delivering high-quality football. He emphasized the experience within the Fiji squad, stating, “We had all the experience in the Fiji team, hardly trained as a team I told the boys that experience will count.” Khan highlighted that their primary focus is on solid defense, with attacking play intended to follow.
He praised his players for their commitment to the game plan and acknowledged the leadership of key team members like Zibraaz Sahib, Abbu Zahid, and William Valentine. Looking ahead, Khan expressed optimism about their performance, particularly in preparing for the tactical strengths that Australia might showcase in future matches.
Additionally, the Fiji Under-17 team began the tournament with a 0-0 draw against New Zealand. Meanwhile, Canada’s Masters teams displayed impressive performances, with the Masters 40 team defeating the USA 3-0, and the defending champions, Canada Legends 50, showcasing their prowess with a standout four-goal performance by striker Lewis Oladuntoye.
FANCA president Mohammed Yusuf noted the positive start to the tournament, indicating the potential for another successful event.
