The Fiji National Football Team has kicked off preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers with a training camp at the Fiji FA Academy in Ba. Coach Rob Sherman has assembled a 26-player squad that blends seasoned players with promising newcomers, aiming to strengthen Fiji’s prospects in the crucial semi-final match against New Zealand.

Sherman expressed confidence in the team’s composition, stating, “We have a talented mix of experienced players and emerging talent. Our goal is to ensure the squad is well-prepared for the challenges ahead. New Zealand is a formidable opponent, but we believe in our ability to compete at the highest level.”

The squad includes a solid domestic base, complemented by 13 players based overseas. Six of these players have been confirmed to join the squad by March 1, while seven others are set to undergo trials in Auckland soon.

Confirmed overseas players expected to enhance the squad include Thomas Dunn, Sterling Vasconcellos, Jerome Narayan, Scott Wara, Nabil Begg, and Leroy Jennings. Meanwhile, the players auditioning for a place in the final squad include Semi Nabenu from Auckland FC, Muzakkir Nabeel from Birkenhead United, and several others from local clubs.

A final 23-player squad will be announced ahead of the team’s departure for an intensive training camp in Auckland set for March 1. Fiji is scheduled to face New Zealand on March 21 at 7 PM (NZT) at Sky Stadium in Wellington, marking a significant moment in their quest for World Cup qualification.

This preparation stage not only showcases Fiji’s commitment to the sport but also highlights the country’s focus on merging experience with fresh talent, providing a hopeful outlook for their upcoming challenge against a strong opponent. The anticipation of the match is building, promising to be a thrilling encounter for fans of both teams.
