Fiji Football Team Aims for Glory in Tebara Nations Championship

The Fiji national football team, under the guidance of coach Ashif Khan, is currently standing in second place in the premier division standings of the Tebara Nations Muslim World Cup Championship 2024, held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park. After two matches, Fiji, the defending champions, secured a 2-0 victory against Australia on the first day and subsequently managed a goalless draw with the USA. They currently have four points, trailing behind New Zealand, who leads with six points from two wins.

Khan acknowledged the competitive nature of the tournament, praising the high level of football exhibited by all teams. He reflected on the team’s composition, indicating that the players’ extensive experience would play a crucial role even though they had limited practice as a unit. “The priority is defence and attack will come in the end,” he emphasized, highlighting the tactical approach they adhered to throughout the matches.

He praised the players for sticking to the game plan and credited key leaders on the team, including Zibraaz Sahib, Abbu Zahid, and William Valentine. Khan expressed confidence in their ability to maintain their performance, recognizing the tactical strengths that Australia would present in future encounters.

In other tournament news, the Fiji Under-17 team had a challenging start, drawing 0-0 against New Zealand in their inaugural match. Meanwhile, Canada’s Masters Teams displayed impressive performances, with the Masters 40 team, coached by Mohammed Imtiaz, defeating the USA 3-0. Additionally, the defending champions Canada Legends 50 showcased their might with striker Lewis Oladuntoye scoring four goals against Fiji.

FANCA president Mohammed Yusuf remarked that the tournament commenced successfully, setting the stage for a competitive and entertaining series of matches.
