The Fiji Football Referees Association (FFRA) marked its 70th anniversary at Yatule Resort’s Intercontinental Hotel on December 7. The celebration was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, who praised the association for its significant contributions to Fijian football. He acknowledged that the sport owes a great deal to the dedication and integrity of its referees, emphasizing the pivotal role the association plays in maintaining fairness both on and off the field.
During his address, Professor Prasad reflected on the foundations laid by FFRA pioneers like Mr. Ahmed Hussein, the first FIFA instructor in Fiji, and Mr. Ram Indarjit, whose commitment to referees’ welfare has been commendable. He also recognized contemporary figures such as Mr. Hari Raj Naicker, Mahendra Singh, and Samay Chandra, who have continued the legacy of ensuring the growth and integrity of the refereeing community.
Professor Prasad shared his personal connection to football, recalling how he admired referees for their wisdom and fairness while growing up as a fan. He also appreciated the enduring support from patrons like Justice Sir Moti Tikaram and former President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, whose influence has been vital to the association’s progress.
He noted improvements in the welfare of referees, highlighting that they are now better compensated and equipped than in the past, with stricter entry requirements that enhance officiating standards in Fiji. Furthermore, he expressed pride in the increasing international recognition of Fijian referees, particularly their eligibility to officiate in regional competitions and the pursuit of the prestigious FIFA badge.
Professor Prasad commended the dedication of FFRA members, underscoring that their passion and commitment to integrity have set a standard that the nation can be proud of. The anniversary celebration was a celebration of the association’s legacy, bringing together current and former referees, dignitaries, and football enthusiasts to honor the FFRA’s contributions to the sport and the community.
Overall, this milestone for the FFRA not only reflects its rich history but also points toward a promising future in which its referees receive the recognition they deserve on international platforms. This celebration is not just a commemoration but a hopeful reminder of the ongoing growth and impact of football officiating in Fiji.
