National striker and leading goal scorer in Oceania football, Roy Krishna, is set to play a key role in Fiji’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Oceania Qualifiers next month. The seasoned player, who has proudly represented Fiji for 16 years, is the nation’s most-capped footballer.
Fiji Football chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf reported that the team has been training effectively after competing in a Tri-Nations series against the Solomon Islands and Hong Kong. Fiji managed to secure a victory over the Solomon Islands and achieved a draw with Hong Kong.
The Bula Boys will leave for Papua New Guinea on November 9 for two matches. Krishna is scheduled to arrive on October 6 to participate in a game against the Solomon Islands on October 10. Following this, he will return to India on October 12 before rejoining the squad in Papua New Guinea.
At 37 years old, Krishna continues to play for his club, Odisha, in the Indian Super League. Yusuf noted that experienced players such as Samuela Kautoga, Setareki Hughes, Akuila Mateisuva, and Krishna are effectively integrating with younger team members.
Coach Rob Sherman and the team management will devise a strategy for the upcoming match against the Solomon Islands. Yusuf expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, emphasizing that all teams have a chance, and he hopes they will start with a victory.
The fixtures for the World Cup Qualifiers include Fiji vs. Solomon Islands on October 10 at HFC Bank Stadium, Fiji, followed by Fiji vs. Papua New Guinea on November 14 and Fiji vs. New Caledonia on November 17, both at PNG Football Stadium.
