Defending champions Rewa will have to adjust their national league commitments significantly as six of their players prepare to represent Fiji in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Oceania qualifiers. Fiji Football Association’s CEO, Mohammed Yusuf, confirmed that these players will be crucial for the upcoming semi-final match against New Zealand on March 21.

The players affected are Setareki Hughes, Patrick Joseph, Tevita Waranaivalu, Epeli Valevou, Gabirieli Matanisiga, and Ivan Kumar. Following their national duties, they will head to the Solomon Islands for the OFC Champions League. As a result of their absence, Rewa will not compete in league matches and will need to complete two fixtures per week upon their return, with the league schedule adjusted to accommodate this.

Yusuf expressed confidence about the match against New Zealand, stating, “Nothing is impossible,” and emphasized the squad’s strength with the addition of experienced overseas players. The team will engage in a 12-day training camp in New Zealand, which will include warm-up matches against local clubs like Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix, allowing the team to refine their strategy under the guidance of coach Rob Sherman.

In a related development, Fiji captain Roy Krishna is expected to miss these pivotal matches as he recovers from ACL surgery. Yusuf acknowledged the impact of Krishna’s absence but encouraged fans in New Zealand to rally behind the national team.

This situation showcases both the challenges and the resilience of Fijian football. With a blend of local talent and international experience, there is a renewed sense of hope for a strong performance in the World Cup qualifiers, further enhancing the spirit of Fijian football.
