One player has tested positive for illegal substances on the opening day of the Extra Battle of the Giants football tournament held at Subrail Park in Labasa, as confirmed by the Chief Executive of the Fiji Football Association, Mohammed Yusuf. A total of 24 players underwent drug testing on day one, while another group of 24 players is scheduled to be tested on the second day of the tournament.
This incident follows a concerning trend in Fijian football regarding substance abuse. During the recent 2024 FMF Inter District Championship held at Churchill Park in Lautoka, 21 out of 180 players tested positive for the use of illegal substances, a sharp increase from just seven cases reported the previous year. Players who test positive face immediate suspension and potential penalties, including fines and suspensions as determined by the Fiji FA Disciplinary Committee.
Efforts to enhance drug testing and educate players on the risks associated with substance use are increasingly critical. The Fiji Football Association has previously recognized the need for stricter measures and awareness initiatives to combat drug use effectively in the sport.
Despite the alarming statistics, there is hope that ongoing testing and educational efforts will yield positive results in promoting a healthier and fairer competitive environment in Fijian football. The association is committed to ensuring the integrity of the sport, which bodes well for the future of football in Fiji.
