The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Board is set to convene soon to formulate a budget dedicated to drug awareness initiatives. Chief Executive Mohammed Yusuf expressed concern over the increasing number of footballers failing drug tests, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

During the recent FMF Inter District Championship held in Lautoka, a staggering twenty-one players tested positive for drug use, a significant rise from the seven cases reported in the previous tournament. Yusuf noted, “This is now a national trend, and the increase in substance abuse reflected in these tests shows that the Government’s concerns are justified.”

To address the issue, the Fiji FA plans to collaborate with relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Fiji Police Force. Yusuf mentioned that the Board will need to approve the proposed budget, which aims to hire psychologists and experts to target footballers and others involved in the sport. He pointed out that the data indicates more than half of the players are abusing drugs.

As part of their social responsibility, Fiji FA aims not only to track and suspend offenders but also to use the data to educate the youth of Fiji about the dangers of drug abuse, highlighting the impact on families, villages, and communities.

In related developments, players found guilty of substance abuse during the IDC face immediate suspension and will be referred to the Fiji FA Disciplinary Committee. First-time offenders can expect a three-month suspension along with a $200 fine, to be paid by both the player and their district. Second offenses will lead to a three-year suspension and a $500 fine, while repeat offenders will face the same penalties. The disciplinary committee will review cases to determine any potential adjustments to the penalties.
