Fiji Football Faces Challenge Amid PSV Passport Dilemma

Fiji’s head football coach, Rob Sherman, has emphasized the critical need for professional players to obtain Fijian passports ahead of the semi-final match in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Oceania Qualifiers scheduled for March. This call to action follows the unfortunate news that captain and star striker Roy Krishna will be sidelined due to an ACL injury.

The Fijian team will face a tough challenge against New Zealand in Wellington on March 21. The other semi-final will see New Caledonia take on Tahiti. Sherman stated that, while their tactical approach remains unchanged, securing the eligibility of professional players without Fijian passports remains a pressing concern. Eligible players from clubs such as Leeds United and Toronto are not currently represented due to passport issues, although they meet FIFA’s criteria to play for Fiji.

In light of Krishna’s absence, Sherman is confident in the abilities of other strikers, including Sairusi Nalaubu and Setareki Hughes, among others, to step up and make an impact. He believes in the scoring potential of the squad, asserting, “If they are presented with goal-scoring opportunities, they are more than capable of scoring.”

The coach also pointed out that improvements are necessary in key areas such as regaining defensive shape after losing possession, preparing against counter-attacks, and defending during set plays.

As Fiji prepares for this pivotal match, there remains a hopeful outlook that talented homegrown and international players can contribute positively, reinforcing the team’s offensive strategies and enhancing their chances for success on the field. With a commitment to training and strategic preparation, Fiji’s squad aims to make a significant impact despite the hurdles they face.
