The Fiji Football Association and the football community are in mourning following the death of Nemani Waka, a former national representative and a celebrated figure in Fijian football. The association expressed deep sorrow over his passing, recognizing Waka’s indelible contributions to the sport in Fiji.
Waka began his football career in Nadi and moved on to play for Lautoka, later joining Ba under the guidance of the late Sashi Mahendra Singh. He achieved significant milestones during his years with Ba and had the honor of representing Fiji at the national level. After his playing career, Waka settled in Sigatoka before emigrating to Australia.
Beyond his playing accolades, Waka was known for his commitment to the welfare of former players. He was instrumental in establishing the Ex-Fiji Reps Welfare Group, now the Ex-Fiji Football Reps Association, dedicated to supporting past national representatives.
This tribute aligns with the recent expressions of grief from various factions within the Fijian sports community, highlighting the strong bonds formed through shared experiences in football and other sports. The passing of influential figures like Waka serves as both a loss and a reminder of the importance of community and support in fostering sporting excellence and volunteerism.
In recognizing Waka’s legacy, the Fiji FA and supporters hope to inspire future generations to serve their communities and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship that Waka embodied.
